Expansive Fantasy Survival
What Is Expansive Fantasy Survival?
A solo worldbuilding project focused on large-scale terrain composition, environmental storytelling, and exploration flow across a handcrafted 15k x 15k block Minecraft world.
Expansive Fantasy Survival is a free fantasy-themed Minecraft map built over the span of 2.5 years.
The world was primarily sculpted in WorldPainter with custom brushes, structures, and biome-level iteration, then refined in-engine with WorldEdit and hand-authored landmarks.
The final map spans roughly 86 square miles of custom terrain.

Solo Development Process
This pipeline combined macro level planning, constant in-engine review, and large scale world polish to keep explorationand engegement high across the full map.
- Top-down planning: Defined and planned the world composition. Such asbiome distribution, travel routes, landmarks, and map-level pacing before major terrain sculpting.
- Terrain painting in WorldPainter: Iterated on biome compositions, elevation flow, and structural placement over many production passes across the vast areas of the map.
- Frequent playtesting & iteration: Exported and tested sections repeatedly in Minecraft to evaluate navigation clarity, visual cohesion, and vibes.
- Final polish pass: Added elements of environmental storytelling, such asroads, ruins, villages, and landmarks to reduce dead space and reinforce world identity.
- Marketing & knowing when to call it quits: Decided on the name Expansive Fantasy Survival, and transitioned to marketing and final polish. This work included writing the project description, and media, creating a trailer, and getting the download page live!
